Choosing a portrait painter is a deeply personal decision. A good
portrait captures the spirit, the very essence of a person, commemorating
that image for the gaze of future generations. I also just love painting
people. Being present before a living, breathing person is an intimate
process and one I feel privileged to do.
As I keenly observe, I too am often being observed and I'm hugely attracted to this subtle psychological exchange: this mutual relationship impacts my interpretation. It begins unconsciously at first, catching a fleeting expression, a hesitant glance, a bold stare, the arched eyebrow or the soft curl of a lip. Gradually I annotate with oils or charcoal, the different feelings a person may be going through as they sit before me - silent with their thoughts.
